history

The first written mention of Morschyn comes from a judicial record on January 2, 1482, in which it is remembered that the town of Morschyn belongs to the Polish nobleman Jurij Nagvazdan and thus to the Polish Kingdom. At that time it was a small village with twelve farms.
At that time the farmers used the Morschyn springs to boil the salt. The then owners of Morschyns, Branecki, later took over this trade because they had received permission from the royal chancellery to open the salt pits. Five wells were dug to extract the brine , from which the salt was extracted by boiling. But the trade was not profitable because the Morschyn salt was bitter and unsuitable for use.

The place experienced a boom in 1875 with the opening of the railway line from Stryj to Stanislau (see railway line Stryj-Ivano-Frankivsk ). The innkeeper and merchant at the time, Bonifacius Stiller - German by origin - drew people's attention to the picturesque landscape and the good connection with the railroad. In the newspapers of 1877 you can read about the opening of a climatic health resort for tuberculosis sufferers in Morschyn.
Stiller invited the doctors V. Piasecky and S. Dzikovsky and founded the organization for air and water cures in Morschyn, as was fashionable in western spas. In May 1878, S. Dzikovsky reported on the possibility of organizing the Morshyn spa at the meeting of the “balneological commission” in Krakow . The doctor Liutostansky, who had headed the inspection in Morshyn, reported that there were three living rooms for those who had traveled, twelve tubs and the wooden water pipe. He also mentioned three sources of bitter-salty water. In 1878 the first official spa period with "facilities for the treatment of breast diseases" was opened. From this time on, the mineral waters of the Morschyn springs became the subject of study. The first chemical analysis of source No. 1 was published in 1881 by Professor of Lviv University V. Radziszewski. In 1879 two more wells were dug, which were named after the owner of the health resort Stiller and his wife, "Bonifacius" (source no. 1) and "Magdalena" (source no. 2). The spring no. 3 was named after the daughter "Ludmila", and the spring no. 5 after the son "Adam". These two sources provide pure water. Source No. 4 was named "Mother of God". Their water is also pure water. At the same time, the healing mud ("Borowina") was found in the area.
The course season of 1880 was opened under the new name "Treatment with mineral water and mud". The water from the mineral springs was now used for mineral baths, the mud for mud baths and mud packs. In the years 1880 and 1881, first attempts were made to use the mineral spring water internally, which obviously proved successful because the water was sold in bottles from 1883 onwards. The spa became known. It was not only known in Austria-Hungary , but also beyond the borders. In advertising brochures published before the First World War , Morshyn was one of the most popular health resorts; it was called "Galician Spa" and "Galician Carlsbad". In those years, many researchers wrote about the healing properties of Morschyn mineral water, comparing it with waters in German, Hungarian and Bohemian baths. It has now been exported to the USA, England, Italy, Romania and other countries. From Warsaw to Morszyn there were direct train wagons marked “Warszawa - Morszyn - The Spa”. The train journey from Lviv to Morshyn took two hours.

Since 1918 Morshyn belonged to Poland. In 1930 the mud baths, the inhalatorium and the drinking hall - the "mushroom" that became the town's landmark, were completed. In 1935, the "Society of Galician Doctors" began building the spa house based on a design by the architect Nikodimovich. Today it is the “Marble Palace” spa house (Ukrainian Мармуровий палац).

After the occupation by the Soviets in late 1944, all nine sanatoriums and private pensions were expropriated and nationalized. In 1948 the place received the status of an urban-type settlement , in 1957 a health clinic was completed, in which outpatient spa treatments are administered. In 1960 the spa facilities were handed over to the unions. Between 1965 and 1975 a cinema, a theater and a modern pump room were built to accommodate the number of spa guests. Often there were 6,000 spa guests in Morshyn. The last large sanatorium "Lavender" (Лаванда) was completed in the late 1980s. The popularity of the health resort grew steadily. In 1964, Morshyn visited 42,221 people, in 1973 it was 59,288, and in 1977 67,137 people were treated. Within the Soviet Union, Morshyn became an all-union.

After Ukraine gained independence, efforts were made to privatize the sanatoriums. Many houses have been completely or partially renovated. On November 19, 1996, the town was granted town charter, and since November 22, 2002, the town has been directly subordinate to the Lviv Oblast administration.

Healing indications

Morshyn's greatest wealth is its diverse composition of mineral waters. Chronic diseases of the stomach, gastrointestinal tract and pancreas are treated with the water from springs No. 1 (containing sulphate, chloride, sodium - total mineralization 165 g / l) and No. 6 (sodium, magnesium, Contains potassium, sulfide, chloride - total mineralization 185 to 238 g / l). For the treatment of the kidneys, the urinary tract and in the case of metabolic disorders, the water from spring no. 4 (total mineralization 0.17 g / l), which is slightly radioactive and slightly mineralized with sodium, magnesium, potassium and iron, is preferably used. For the musculoskeletal system, mud and paraffin packs are given and baths are prescribed.
