Coordinates: 36 ° 40 ′ S , 149 ° 50 ′ E The Bega Valley Shire is a local government area (LGA) in the Australian state of New South Wales . The area is 6,278.9 km² and has about 33,000 inhabitants.
Bega Valley is located in the southeast corner of New South Wales on the Pacific coast on the border with the state of Victoria . It is located about 420 km south of the metropolis of Sydney and 220 km southeast of the Australian capital Canberra . The area comprises 149 hamlets and villages, including Bega , Bemboka, Bermagui, Bermagui South, Boydtown, Brogo, Burragate, Candelo, Cobargo, Eden , Griegs Flat, Jellat Jellat, Kameruka, Kiah, Lochiel, Merimbula, Nethercote, Pambula, Pambula Beach , Quaama, Tathra, Timbillica, Towamba, Tura Beach, Wolumla, Wonboyn Lake, Wyndham and Yowrie. The seat of the Shire Council is in the town of Bega in the middle of the LGA, where about 4,150 inhabitants live.
Bega Valley Shire extends in the south to Cape Howe , which is the southernmost land mass of New South Wales and marks the border with Victoria.

The Bega Valley Shire Council has nine members who are elected by LGA residents. Bega Valley is not divided into districts. The mayor of the council is also recruited from among the councilors.
