Stebnyk ( Ukrainian Стебник ; Russian Стебник Stebnik , Polish Stebnik ) is a Ukrainian city with a little over 20,000 inhabitants. It is located in Lviv Oblast south of the district capital Lviv . The next largest city is Drohobych , to which the place also belongs administratively.
The village was mentioned in writing for the first time in 1440 and was in the aristocratic republic of Poland until 1772 , then came to Austrian Galicia as Stebnik (last in the Drohobycz district) and became part of the Second Polish Republic in 1918/21 (in the Lviv Voivodeship , Powiat Drohobycz , Gmina Stebnik). After the end of the Second World War , the city came to the Soviet Union in the Ukrainian SSR and was later incorporated into Drohobych. Since 1991 Stebnyk has been part of independent Ukraine.
The salt deposits around the place were already being mined in the 19th century, in 1922 a large potassium salt mine was opened by the company TESP (Towarzystwo Eksploatacji Soli Potasowej) from Kałusz , which accelerated the development of the place enormously.
Under Soviet rule, the place was raised to an urban-type settlement on October 17, 1969, and on January 21, 1978 it was granted city status.
After the Second World War, the villages of Kolpez (1977, Колпець, Polish Kołpiec ) and Solez (Солець, Polish Solec ) were incorporated.
