Hlynjany (Ukrainian Глиняни ; Russian Глиняны / Glinjany , Polish Gliniany ) is a small town in western Ukraine about 37 kilometers east of the Oblast capital Lviv on the Tymkowezkyj river (Тимковецький). The northern village of Scheniw (Женів) also belongs to the municipality ; the former village of Zamoście was incorporated into the municipality before 1939.
The place was mentioned in writing for the first time in 1379 and received Magdeburg city rights in 1397 . As Gliniany it belonged to Austrian Galicia from 1774 to 1918 , between 1854 and 1867 the place was the seat of a district administration, after which a district court for the Przemyślany district was established. In November 1918, after the collapse of the Danube Monarchy at the end of the First World War , the city was briefly part of the West Ukrainian People's Republic . In the Polish-Ukrainian War , Poland occupied the last parts of the West Ukrainian People's Republic in July 1919. During the Second World War , Hlynjany was first occupied by the Soviet Union and from 1941 to 1944 by Germany . The large Jewish community was completely wiped out during World War II.
In 1945 Hlynjany came back to the Soviet Union, there the place, which was declared an urban-type settlement in 1940, became part of the Ukrainian SSR and has been part of the independent Ukraine since 1991. Between 1940/1944 and 1961, Hlynjany was the capital of the district of Hlynjany district of the same name . On February 3, 1993, the place received city rights again.
