Burshtyn (Ukrainian Бурштин ; Russian Бурштын , Polish Bursztyn ) is in the Soviet era quickly grown city in Oblast Ivano-Frankivsk ( Ukraine ) with 14,700 inhabitants (1 January 2004).
history
The city, whose name means amber , was first mentioned in writing in 1554 and at that time it belonged to Poland. In 1772 it came under Austrian rule within Galicia and was the seat of a district administration from 1850 to 1867 , after which it was the seat of a district court in the Rohatyn district . After the end of the First World War in 1918 it became a part of Poland again, was first occupied by the Soviet Union in 1939 and by Germany in 1941 . After the end of the war, the place remained with the Soviet Union within the Ukrainian SSR , as early as 1940 the place became the capital of Burshtyn Raion and remained so until 1962, since 1991 it has been part of the independent Ukraine. It was only granted city status in 1993. It is directly subordinate to the oblast administration (until March 11, 2014 in Halytsch Rajon ) and has a rail connection. Administratively, the village of Vyhivka (Вигівка) also belongs to the city.
Economy and Infrastructure
A special feature is the Burschtynskyj TES coal-fired power plant , which is located next to an artificially dammed lake about 8 kilometers long and about 2 kilometers wide. In the immediate vicinity of the lake there is also a large fish farm near the village of Bilschinzi . The city is home to the College of Trade and Economics of the Kiev National University of Trade and Economics .
The soccer club Energetyk is well known .
