Yaremche (Ukrainian Яремче ; Russian Яремча / Yaremche , Polish Jaremcze - more rarely Jaremcza or older Jaremze ) is a town and health resort in the western Ukrainian Ivano-Frankivsk Oblast on the upper reaches of the river Prut on the north side of the Carpathian arc , about 54 kilometers from Ivano-Frankivsk away. The municipal area (population: 20821) includes the urban type Vorokhta and the 5 villages Voronenko (Вороненко), Mykulychyn , Polyanyzja , Tatariv and Jablunyzja , the area lies entirely within the Nadwirna district .
history
The place arose at the end of the 18th century (first mentioned in 1787) under Austrian administration in the crown land of Galicia , but only developed into a larger town after the construction of the railway ( Sighetu Marmației – Ivano-Frankivsk railway ) and the establishment of a stop from 1894. After the end of the First World War , the place became part of Poland and was expanded into a climatic health resort , mainly tuberculosis diseases were treated here; by the end of the 1920s there were already 6000 spa guests annually. Because of its picturesque location in the Carpathian Mountains, it was given the nickname “Pearl of the Carpathian Mountains”. In 1939 the Yaremche was occupied by the Red Army , but came under German administration after the attack on the Soviet Union in 1941 and was only conquered by the Soviet Union again in 1945 and then remained in the Ukrainian SSR or, since 1991, a part of Ukraine. Under Soviet rule, the place in was Yaremche (Яремча) renamed, carried on the tradition of the spa, there were added many new hotels. Already in 1940 the place, which was raised to an urban-type settlement at the same time , became the capital of the Yaremcha Rajon (originally Mykulychyn Rajon ), this existed until the end of 1962 when it was attached to the Nadwirna Rajon. Since 1963 the place has the status of a city (initially under district administration and from December 30, 1977 under oblast administration), it is connected to 1 urban-type settlement and 5 villages that exist as enclaves in the middle of the Nadwirna district . By a decision of the Verkhovna Rada , the name of the city was changed back to "Yaremche" on November 14, 2006.
