Wikentij Chwoika

Wikentij V'jatscheslawowytsch Chwoika ( Czech Vincenc Častoslav Chvojka , Čeněk Chvojka ; born February 21, 1850 in Semín , Bohemia ; † August 20, 1914 in Kiev ) was a Ukrainian archaeologist of Bohemian origin. He is considered to be the discoverer of the Tripolje culture .

Life

Vincenc Častoslav Chvojka was born in 1850 in the Austro-Hungarian village of Semin in Bohemia . He studied at the Chrudim School of Commerce and then lived in Prague . In 1876 Chwoika moved to Kiev, where he initially taught drawing and the German language and was successful in agriculture. He later devoted himself to the study of antiquities and was one of the founders of the Kiev Museum of Antiques and Art , which was officially opened in 1899 , in whose museum building is now the National Art Museum of Ukraine and with which he remained lifelong as head of the archaeological department. In 1890 he began the archaeological exploration of the Middle Dnepr with private funds . He found remains of a settlement of the Magdalenian culture ( Kiev-Kyrill-Wohnplatz ) in Kiev- Podil and finally discovered artifacts of the Tripolje culture, named after this place, about 40 km south of Kiev, near Trypillja . He presented his research results at the 11th Congress of Archaeologists in 1897.

Wikentij Chwoika died in Kiev in 1914 and was buried in the local Baikowe cemetery .

Honor

Ukrainian 2- coin commemorating Chwoika's 150th birthday in 2000

On the occasion of his 150th birthday, the National Bank of Ukraine issued a 2 ₴ coin in his honor in 2000.
