history

The newspaper was originally founded by the Catholic Church in Korea in 1946, but later became the property of the Hanwha Group, part of the chaebols , the wealthy South Korean family businesses. During the Asian financial crisis (1997/98), the company withdrew from the newspaper business. The newspaper was on the verge of collapse.

But even under the autocratic ruling first President of South Korea Rhee Syng-man , the paper had to suffer. Because it reported critical of him, it should be discontinued. But the pro-democratic revolution of April 19, 1960 gave the newspaper a new boost. During the dictatorial regime of Park Chung-hee (1961–1979), the paper came under pressure again and into the hands of the Hanhwa group.

Only with the financial crisis did the tide turn. The newspaper became the property of his employees, who have run the newspaper company democratically ever since. Around 50% of the company is spread over around 600 employees, including around 240 journalists as of 2015. The rest is in the hands of former employees and the company itself. The company's board of directors is re-elected every three years and the employed journalists have the right to veto the election of the editor-in-chief.

The newspaper describes itself as a liberal paper that sees itself as independent and only "has to fear" its readers. The paper supports the moderate progressive path, engages in investigative journalism, advocates human rights, is against violence and supports the rights of freedom. Among other things, the workforce advocates a peaceful rapprochement with North Korea , supports the rights of homosexuals and is against the death penalty. For this, the newspaper is often defamed by conservatives as the “left fighting paper”.

The newspaper's three overseas offices, Beijing , Tokyo and Washington, DC , provide the newspaper with the latest reports from the countries most important to South Korea. Daily sports coverage, a monthly lifestyle magazine for women " The Lady Kyunghyang " and " The Jugan Kyunghyang ", a weekly news magazine, complete the range.
