geography

Kachanivka is located in Itschnja Rajon 27 km east of the district center Itschnja and belongs to the district council of the village Petrushivka ( Петрушівка ) 2 km north . The Chernihiv Oblast Center is 170 km northwest and Kiev is 180 km southwest of Kachanivka.

Tarnowski Castle

The greatest attraction of the village is the classicist residence of the Governor General of Ukraine under Tsarina Catherine II , Pyotr Rumyantsev-Sadunaiski .

Tarnowski Castle

The palace was built in the 1770s based on designs by Karl Blank .

After Pyotr's son, Nikolai Rumjanzew , died, the estate became the property of the noble Tarnowski family. Wassyl Tarnowskyj senior and his son Wassyl Tarnowskyj junior (1838–1899), patrons and owners of the estate, welcomed Nikolai Gogol , Taras Shevchenko , Ilya Repin , Michail Wrubel and Michail Glinka here in the 19th century .

Although the Bolsheviks nationalized the palace and used it first as a penal colony and later as a tuberculosis hospital, the manor house, the English park and several outbuildings have been very well preserved and were declared a historical and cultural reserve in 1981 and a national reserve in 2001.
