Vasyl Wassyljowytsch Tarnowskyj senior ( Ukrainian Василь Васильович Тарновський , Russian Василий Васильевич Тарновский Vassily Tarnowski ; born June 14, jul. / 26. June  1810 greg. In Antonowka , Poltava Governorate , Russian Empire ; † December 4 jul. / December 16  1866 greg. , Russian Empire) was a Ukrainian ethnographer , legal historian and patron .

Life

Wassyl Tarnowskyj came from an old Ukrainian Cossack family and was born in Antonowka ( Антонівка ) in what is now Varwa Rajon in the Ukrainian Chernihiv Oblast .

He went to school with Nikolai Gogol, who was the same age, at the grammar school in Nizhyn and then studied law at Moscow University. After completing his studies, he taught at the high school in Zhytomyr between the beginning of 1833 and the end of 1835 , but after the death of his parents was forced to manage the family estate. After he had inherited a huge fortune from his late uncle, including a beautiful property in Kachanivka in Chernigov Governorate , where he, among others, in 1859 Taras Shevchenko received, he was a patron of Ukrainian culture and was, for example, the publication of works Pantelejmon Kulischs responsible . As an opponent of serfdom, he was actively involved in the preparation of legislative reforms of 1861. He also wrote articles on legal and ethnographic topics.

Wassyl Tarnowskyj senior cultivated friendly relations with Nikolai Gogol, Taras Shevchenko , Nikolai Kostomarow and Pantelejmon Kulisch, was close to the Cyril and Method Brotherhood and was the father of the patron and activist Wassyl Tarnowskyj junior . He died at the age of 56, was laid out in Chernigov and buried in Kachanivka.
