Vasyl Wassylowytsch Tarnowskyj junior ( Ukrainian Василь Васильович Тарновський , Russian Василий Васильевич Тарновский Vassily Tarnowski ; born March 20, jul. / 1. April  1838 greg. (Other sources by 1837) in Antonowka , Poltava Governorate , Russian Empire ; † June 13 July / June 25,  1899 greg. in Kiev , Russian Empire) was a Ukrainian patron and social and cultural activist.

Life

Wassyl Tarnowskyj was born in Antonowka ( Антонівка ) in what is now Varwa Raion of the Ukrainian Oblast of Chernihiv and was born as the son of the ethnographer and legal historian Wassyl Tarnowskyj senior (1810–1866), an old Ukrainian Cossack family.

He graduated from the Faculty of History and Philology at St. Vladimir University in Kiev and was chairman of the Ujesd Borsna from 1869 to 1872 and of the Ujesd Nischyn from 1875 to 1887 . Since 1891 he was an honorary member of the Proswita Society of Lviv .

Tarnowskyj was heir to a large fortune and a large estate in Kachanivka , Chernigov Governorate , where he numerous outstanding scientists and personalities, including Marko Vovchok , Oleksandr Lasarewskyj , Dmytro Jawornyzkyj , Nikolai Kostomarov , Mykola Biljaschiwskyj , Panteleimon Kulish , Vasyl Horlenko , Nikolai Ge , Hryhorij Tschestachiwskyj and Ilja Repin received, whose works he also supported financially.

Tarnowskyj created one of the most extensive and most important commemorative collections of Taras Shevchenko , whose talent he recognized and promoted early on. The collection is now in the National Taras Shevchenko Museum in Kiev and in the Institute of Literature of Taras Shevchenko of the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine . Later he actively supported the construction of the Taras Shevchenko tomb in Kaniw . He also supported the Kiev painting school of Mykola Muraschko financially.

He died in Kiev at the age of 61 and was buried in the Svirynezke Cemetery ( Звіринецьке кладовище ) in the Kiev Pechersk district . After his death in 1902, based on his collection and determined by him in his will, the Museum of Ukrainian Antiquities of the Chernigov Governorate was opened, which was named in 1906 and became part of the Chernigov History Museum after 1923 . In 1991 the museum was named after him again.
