Wassyl Horlenko
Vasyl Petrowytsch Horlenko ( Ukrainian Василь Петрович Горленко , Russian Василий Петрович Горленко Vasily Petrovich Gorlenko ; born March 1, jul. / 13. March 1853 greg. In Jaroschiwka , Poltava Governorate , Russian Empire ; † April 14 jul. / 27. April 1907 greg. in Saint Petersburg , Russian Empire) was a Ukrainian writer , literary critic , art historian , folklorist and ethnographer .
Life
Wassyl Horlenko came from an old Ukrainian Cossack family , known since the 16th century, and was born in Yaroshiwka, today's Ukrajinske ( Українське ) in the Ukrainian Chernihiv Oblast (another spring in the same-named place in Sumy Oblast ).
He first studied at the Nischyn Lyceum and then at the Sorbonne in Paris until 1882 . He then wrote numerous articles for the monthly magazine for Ukrainian studies Kievskaia Starina , which is published in Kiev , including articles on Ukrainian literature and Dumas (Ukrainian lyrical-epic folk songs of the Cossack period of the 16th and 17th centuries). He also wrote literary portraits of writers such as Taras Shevchenko , Ivan Franko , Ivan Kotljarewskyj , Hryhorij Kwitka-Osnovyanenko and Ivan Nechuj-Levyzkyj as well as studies of classical artists such as Dmitri Levizki and Vladimir Borowikowski .
Horlenko maintained close relationships with artists such as Marija Sankowezka , Nikolai Kostomarow and Panas Myrnyj . He died at the age of 54 in Saint Petersburg and was buried in his home village.
Some of his works were published between 1898 and 1905. In 1934 a monograph on him by Dmytro Doroshenko was published in Paris.
