Maria Sankovetska
Marija Kostjantyniwna Sankowezka ( Ukrainian Марія Костянтинівна Заньковецька ; born July 23 . Jul / 4. August 1854 greg. In Sanky , Chernigov Governorate , Russian Empire ; † 4. October 1934 in Kiev , Ukrainian SSR ) was a Ukrainian theater actress.
Sankovetska was a star of Ukrainian theater in the late 19th and early 20th centuries.
Life
The native Marija Kostjantyniwna Adassowska came from an impoverished aristocratic family with Cossack ancestors. Her grandfather, K. Adassovsky, was a veteran of the Patriotic War of 1812 and her father was a judge by profession. She attended a private school in Chernigov . She later took singing lessons in Saint Petersburg and attended a music conservatory in Moscow . As a mezzo-soprano , she took part in amateur performances and concerts in the cities of Chernigov and Nischyn and, after their marriage in 1875, in the cities of Bender and Sveaborg .
On October 27, 1882, she made her theatrical debut on the stage of the first Ukrainian professional theater by Marko Kropywnyzkyj in Jelisavetgrad as "Natasha" in Ivan Kotlyarevskyi's drama Natalka-Poltawka . After that she toured for years in various acting troupes through Ukraine, Georgia, Azerbaijan as well as to Moscow and Saint Petersburg . In 1907 she organized the first permanent theater in Kiev together with Mykola Sadowskyj and between 1909 and 1915 she directed amateur theater groups in Nizhyn and Krolevets .
Her last stage appearance was in Kiev in 1922, and in the same year a theater was founded that bore her name. She died in Kiev in 1934 and was buried in the Baikowe Cemetery.
Her acting talent brought Sankowezka great fame and recognition. Her work had a major impact on the development of Ukrainian drama, as well as the creation of a national Ukrainian theater. She starred in the film Natalka-Poltawka in 1910 and in the film Ostap Bandura in 1923, and wrote an autobiography that was published several times.
Honors
In 1922 she was awarded the honorary title of People's Artist of the Ukrainian SSR . In 1964, a memorial museum was opened in her place of birth in her honor. There are monuments in her memory in Chernihiv and Kiev. Her former home in Kiev has been converted into a museum ( Музей Марії Заньковецької ). The Ukrainian National Bank issued a two hryvnia commemorative coin on her 150th birthday in 2004 and the Ukrainian Post issued a postage stamp with her likeness.
