Marko Lukytsch Kropywnyzkyj (born May 10, jul. / 22. May 1840 greg. In Beschbairaky , Kherson Gubernia , Russian Empire ; † April 8 jul. / 21st April 1910 greg. In the government of Kherson, Russian Empire) was a Ukrainian writer , Director, playwright, composer and stage actor. Kropywnyzkyj was one of the founders and director of the first professional Ukrainian theater in the then Russian-dominated Ukraine.
Life
Marko Kropywnyzkyj was born into a noble family in the village of Beschbairaky, which was later renamed Kropywnyzke after him and is now in the Ukrainian Oblast of Kirovohrad , Novoukrajinka district. In 1871 he went to the professional theater of Russian folk drama in Odessa , where he played mainly the Ukrainian characters. For the next ten years he was on the road with the theater group and played mainly in Odessa, Kharkiv , Cherson , Jelisavetgrad and Yekaterinoslav , but also in Galicia (1875), Crimea and Saint Petersburg (1874). In 1882 he founded his own Ukrainian professional touring theater company in Jelisavetgrad, which was the first theater company of its kind. With her, a new era began in the history of Ukrainian theater. She held a celebrated tour of Ukrainian and Russian cities and received good reviews from both Ukrainian and Russian sources. Mykola Woronyj , Panas Saksahanskyj , Iwan Karpenko-Karyj , Marija Sankowezka , Marija Sadowska-Barilotti and Mychajlo Staryzkyj performed in his theater .
Kropywnyzkyj was a friend of Ilya Repin , who, according to one representation, immortalized him in his painting The Zaporozhian Cossacks Write a Letter to the Turkish Sultan . Marko Kropywnyzkyj died in 1910 while on the way from Mykolaiv to Kharkiv, where he was finally buried.
His daughter Oleksandra Kropywnyzka ( Олександра Марківна Кропивницька 1888-1969) was a well-known opera and chamber singer.
The central Ukrainian city of Kropywnyzkyj , formerly Kirowohrad, has been named after him since July 2016 .
