Panas Karpowytsch Saksahanskyj ( Ukrainian Панас Карпович Саксаганський * March 15 jul. / 27. March  1859 greg. In Kamjano-Kostuwate ( Кам'яно-Костувате ), Kherson Gubernia , Russian Empire ; † 17th September 1940 in Kiev , Ukrainian SSR ) was a Ukrainian theater actor and director.

Life

Panas Saksahanskyj was born as Panas Tobilewytsch in the village of Kamjano-Kostuwate in what is now the Ukrainian Oblast of Mykolaiv to an impoverished aristocratic family. He was the brother of Ivan Karpenko-Karyj , Marija Sadowska-Barilotti and Mykola Sadowskyj . He attended elementary school in the Bobrynez school district and from 1875 he appeared as an amateur actor under the direction of Marko Kropywnyzkyj , whose pupil and supporter he became, in Jelisavetgrad , today's Kropywnyzkyj. In 1877 he graduated from high school in Jelisavetgrad, where the later publisher Yevhen Tschykalenko was his classmate, and in 1878 went to the cadet school in Odessa for military service.

From 1883 he worked as an actor in the professional theater groups of Mychajlo Staryzkyj , Marko Kropywnyzkyj (from 1885), and Mykola Sadowskyj (from 1888). Between 1890 and 1909 he led his own theater group at the u. a. the Ukrainian theater actress Marija Sankowezka performed. From 1910 to 1915 he toured with various theater groups in cities in Ukraine and Russia. He died in Kiev and was buried in the Baikowe Cemetery.
