Dmytro Jawornyzkyj 1885

Dmytro Iwanowytsch Jawornyzkyj (born October 25 . Jul / 6. November  1855 greg. In Solnzewka , Kharkov Governorate , Russian Empire ; † 5. August 1940 in Dnipropetrovsk , Ukrainian SSR , Soviet Union ) was a Ukrainian ethnographer , historian and lexicographer .

Life

Dmytro Jawornyzkyj was born as Dmitrij Ivanovich Evarnizkij in Solnzewka, today's Boryssiwka in the north of the Ukrainian Oblast Kharkiv . He studied at the historical-philological faculty of Kharkiv University from 1877 to 1886 and taught Russian history at the Kharkiv grammar school between 1881 and 1886 until he was dismissed by the local authorities due to his separatist (pro-Ukrainian) tendencies. He then taught in Saint Petersburg (1896) and from 1897 as a lecturer in the history and archeology of the Ukrainian Cossacks at the University of Moscow . In 1902 Dmytro Jawornyzkyj accepted the offer to become museum director of the Historical Museum in Yekaterinoslav , which he remained throughout his life. The museum turned into a model museum under his leadership. Thus wrote W. Giljarowski (Russian В. Гиляровский) «Музей - Украине всей краса…; »(German:" Museum - the Ukraine of all splendor ...; "). He also published a catalog with the museum exhibits and some reports on the work of the museum in 1905 and 1910. Since 1929 he was a member of the Ukrainian Academy of Sciences .

In addition to extensive studies of the life of the Ukrainian people , especially the Zaporozhian Cossacks , which earned him the nickname "Father of the Zaporozhian", Jawornyzkyj was interested in their folk art, especially in embroidery, Easter egg painting and the tradition of house decoration. He discovered and studied today as intangible heritage of humanity recognized petrykivka painting . Based on Jawornyzkyj's research, the Ukrainian ethnographer Fedir Wowk, as curator of the Russian Museum in Saint Petersburg, added exhibits of this painting to the collection of the Ukrainian department of the museum.

Appreciations

The five-kilometer-long most important boulevard of Dnipro , Dmytro-Jawornyzkyj-Prospect , has been named after him since 2016, as has the city's National Historical Museum , where he was once director and on whose forecourt there is a monument to him. A branch of the museum is the House Museum in memory of DI Jawornyzkyj ( Меморіальний будинок-музей Д. І. Яворницького ), a museum in the center of Dnipro that is dedicated to the life and activities of Dmytro Jawornyzky.

Since Jawornyzkyj was a friend of Ilya Repin , he immortalized him as the scribe in his monumental painting The Zaporozhian Cossacks write a letter to the Turkish sultan . In November 1998 a memorial was opened by him in Kharkiv and coins and postage stamps with his likeness appeared in his honor in independent Ukraine.
