Gustavo Cabral (* 20th July 1963 in Buenos Aires , Argentina ) is an Argentine Fantasy - Illustrator , painter , artist and author . Cabral is known by the stage name " Ciruelo " ("plum tree"). He specializes in particular in painting dragons .

life and work

Ciruelo Cabral was born in Buenos Aires in Argentina in 1963. From birth he suffers from color ametropia . At the age of 13 he enrolled in the Instituto Fernando Fader, an art school. At 15, his first drawing was published in a school newspaper, and he was also designing a flyer for a teenage rock concert. At the age of 18 he started a career as an illustrator for a commercial graphics company . Shortly afterwards he designed the first comic book covers. At the age of 21 he began to work as a freelance illustrator. In 1987, at the age of 24, he emigrated to the Catalan town of Sitges near Barcelona , Spain , where he illustrated fantasy book covers and pages for the Spanish fantasy publisher Timun Mas.

Cabral continued to work in this genre for companies around the world, including Germany, England, Spain and the United States. He designed the covers of the Chronicles of the Shadow War , a novel trilogy sequel to the fantasy film Willow by Chris Claremont at Bantam Verlag. He also painted music album covers, such as Steve Vais The Seventh Song (2000) and magazine covers, for Playboy and the comic magazine Heavy Metal , among others . For the trading card game Magic: The Gathering , he produced artwork at. In 2006 he worked with Alejandro Jodorowsky on the fantasy comic The Alchemical Egg .

Among other things, he published books with his drawings at Paper-Tiger-Verlag, such as: Das Buch der Drachen ( The Book of the Dragon , 1990), Ciruelo (1990), Luz, the Art of Ciruelo (1997) and Magia, the Ciruelo Sketchbook (2000). His work was exhibited in the Paper Tiger Fantasy Art Gallery in 2002 .

Cabral mainly uses acrylic and oil paints . One of his painting techniques are "Petropicto"; a combination of engraving and airbrush stone painting.

He still lives in Sitges with his wife Daniela and their children Angelo and Lys.
