Volodymyr Donatowytsch Orlowskyj (* January 20 . Jul / 1. February 1842 greg. In Kiev , Kiev Governorate , Russian Empire ; † 19th February 1914 in Genoa , Italy ) was a Ukrainian landscape and genre painter of realism .
Life
Volodymyr Orlowskyj was born in Kiev and received his first drawing lessons there between 1855 and 1860 at the grammar school from Ivan Soshenko , a friend of Taras Shevchenko . After Soshenko discovered Orlowskyi's talent, he came to the Imperial Art Academy in Saint Petersburg in 1861 on the recommendation of Shevchenko , where he studied until 1868.
During his studies he traveled to numerous places and areas in European Russia such as Moscow , Finland , Crimea , Kiev and the Taurian Governorate . In a competition organized for academy graduates, he received a gold medal for his three pictures of a Crimean landscape and won a three-year trip through Europe, which he used from 1869 to 1872 to study and visit museums in France, Switzerland, Germany and Italy. In 1874 he became a member of the academy and from 1878 professor of landscape painting and a member of the council of the Academy of Arts. In 1886 he returned to Ukraine. From 1900 to 1902 he lived in Kiev and taught at the Kiev drawing school of Mykola Muraschko and in 1901 was a co-founder of the Kiev art school. He died in February 1914 at the age of 72 during a trip to Italy in Nervi , a district of Genoa. His body was transferred to Kiev and buried there in the Lukjanivska cemetery .

Orlowskyj's pictures are very diverse both geographically (from Finland to the Crimea) and in terms of content (time of day, weather, season, etc.). He knew how to transfer the current state of nature onto canvas. At the end of the nineteenth century, his paintings were very popular and sold very well to the urban nobility and members of the imperial family. His contemporaries called him the “star of the first order” and the artist “at the forefront of a new real direction in Russian landscape painting”. He was a welcome guest at national and international exhibitions. Today his works are presented in many museums. His picture River Gnilitsa was in 2016 Sotheby's in London for 286,971 US $ sold.
