The Sichote-Alin ( Russian Сихотэ-Алинь , from Manchurian via Chinese ; in China to this day often called Inner Hinggan Mountains ( Chinese  内 兴安岭 , Pinyin Nèi Xīng'ān Lǐng ); German also Sichote-Alin Mountains ) is a high mountain range in the Far East of Russia . Two of its peaks are higher than 2000 meters: the Tordoki-Jani with 2077 m and the Ko with 2003 m. Parts of the region have been a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 2001 . In 2018, the UNESCO World Heritage Site of Sichote-Alin was expanded threefold by adding the Bikin Valley in the north.

The mountain range extends for about 1350 kilometers in the regions of Khabarovsk and Primorye . In the north-west and north it borders on the Amur and its mouth, in the north-east on the Tatar Sound , which separates the Asian mainland from the Russian island of Sakhalin . In the east and south the mountains meet the Sea of Japan . In the west it borders on the valley of the Ussuri , which rises in the southwest of the mountains, and on the river valley of the Amur.

The Ussuri and its right tributaries, such as the Chor and Bikin, have their source in the mountains . The largest cities are located on the western and southern edges of the sparsely populated mountains; from north to south these are Komsomolsk , Khabarovsk , Ussuriysk , Vladivostok and Nakhodka . Because of the inaccessibility and the oceanic climate, many areas of the mountains are considered to be a varied natural landscape. Bear, wolf and the threatened Siberian tiger roam through primeval beech forests . The largest protected area in the region is the Sichote-Alin nature reserve .
