The Meizu M8 is an Internet- and multimedia-capable multi-touch - Smartphone Chinese MP3 player manufacturer Meizu. Long before its appearance, the cell phone sparked controversial discussions due to its strong similarity to Apple's iPhone . The operating system of the Meizu M8 or minione is a version of Windows CE 6.0 that has been heavily modified by Meizu and is similar to the GUI of Apple iOS .

A first version of the M8 was presented on March 4, 2008 at the CeBIT . A non-functional plastic prototype and a development board with a first version of the Meizu OS including a telephone function could be seen. The release of the Handy has been delayed by almost 2 years since the announcement. From December 8, 2008, a small number of units was available on the Chinese market for the first time. However, this “test version” lacked the mobile radio license stickers that are important for China. However, Meizu has had this license since January 14, 2009. The official release date of the black 8 GB version of the Meizu M8 was February 18, 2009. A 16 GB version was later released and finally the white version of the M8 on April 28, 2009.

With "M8Android" there was an attempt to port the Android operating system to the device.

Firmware 1.0

Meizu redeveloped the entire interface for firmware version 1.0 and expanded the mobile phone with a number of functions, such as direct download from the integrated Opera browser or programs such as the Messenger QQ . The operating system on which the Meizu interface is based was updated to WinCE 6.0 Release 3. This development process is still ongoing. The new interface was first officially released on February 6, 2010 with firmware version 0.9.6.9.

Controversy

On March 5th, the Meizu booth at CeBit 2008 was closed by the police. Contrary to all rumors, the M8 was not the reason, but allegedly unlicensed support of the MP3 format on the Meizu MP3 players.

With the market launch of the iPhone on the Chinese market, Apple first sought an agreement with the Chinese patent office and Meizu for a production stop, but then demanded an immediate sales stop, which was also enforced.

WLAN / EDGE

As WLAN is not approved by the Chinese government without WAPI , the function is not available by default. However, the necessary hardware is available in some devices so that you can activate WLAN on the M8 with a simple program. EDGE can also be used instead of GPRS . An international version of the M8 with WiFi was never publicly announced. Nevertheless, WLAN versions of the cell phone are still offered on the Internet.

Dual or quad band

The phone was advertised as a dual-band phone on the official Meizu website . Nevertheless, at least cell phones of the first production batch , the so-called test devices , should also work with the frequencies 850 and 1900 MHz. This was confirmed by users in Meizu community forums .

Meizu M8SE

The second version of the M8, the M8SE (Second Edition), was released on September 22, 2009. Production of the M8 was stopped at the same time. New to this version is the official support of WLAN or WAPI as well as EDGE. The SIM cover has also been changed slightly, some chips have been replaced and the music button on the right-hand side of the phone has been omitted.

Meizu M9

Long before firmware 1.0 was reached, company boss Jack Wong announced the successor to the M8. The M9 is 3G capable and equipped with a 1 GHz processor, a 3.6-inch multitouch display with a resolution of 960 × 640 pixels, 512 MB RAM , WLAN and GPS, and a 5 megapixel camera. Internal storage was dispensed with and a microSD card slot was used instead. This time Android 2.2 with a Meizu-specific interface was chosen as the operating system. The Meizu M9 has been available since December 25, 2010.
