history

The coat of arms was designed by the Schwerin heraldist Heinz Kippnick in 1996.

The bull head shown symbolizes the rule and the later Duchy of Mecklenburg . The crosier was taken from the coat of arms of the diocese of Ratzeburg , which was secularized in 1648 and became the principality of Ratzeburg . It also symbolizes the areas that once belonged to the Schwerin diocese .

The approval for the use of the coat of arms was given by the decision of the Ministry of the Interior of Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania on July 1, 1996. The coat of arms was entered under the register number 116 in the coat of arms of Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania.

With the district reform in Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania on September 4, 2011, the previously independent city of Wismar was incorporated into the district and at the same time district town. There is a new draft coat of arms, which the district council already approved in December 2011.
