Bouchalès

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Bouchalès [ bu.ʃa.lɛs ] is an old red wine variety that is grown in Aquitaine in the Bordeaux wine-growing region and in the Sud-Ouest wine-growing region in the south-west of France . In 1988 a planted vineyard area of 487 hectares was recorded after the statistics from 1958 showed a stock of 4,973 hectares.

The red wines have a low alcohol content, strong tannins ( tannins ) and are deep red when fully ripe.

Ampelographic varietal characteristics

In ampelography , the habitus is described as follows:

  • The shoot tip is open. She is hairy white wool. The green and shiny young leaves are woolly at first, later hairy with cobwebs.
  • The slightly pentagonal leaves (see also the article leaf shape ) are dark green, not bulged or slightly five-lobed. The stalk bay is lyren-shaped open or slightly closed. The leaf margin is bluntly serrated. The teeth are set wide compared to other grape varieties. In autumn the leaves turn red in parts.
  • The cylindrical to cone-shaped grape is medium-sized, shouldered and dense berries. The rounded berries are small. When fully ripe, they are deep blue to black in color and have a thick berry skin.

The Bouchalès grape variety ripens around 20-25 days after the Gutedel and is one of the grape varieties of the late second ripening period (see the chapter in the article grape variety). It is therefore considered to ripen late for a grape variety internationally. The variety is considered to be high-yielding, but requires extremely warm locations. It seldom reaches full maturity in south-west France.

Bouchalès sprouts early and is therefore endangered by late spring frosts. It is sensitive to the fungal diseases of powdery mildew and downy mildew as well as gray mold rot . Bouchalès is a variety of the noble grapevine ( Vitis vinifera ).
