Baklatschjan first attracted international attention in 2002 when he reached the quarter-finals at the European Championships and was only barely defeated by the Ukrainian Jaroslaw Wynokur (4: 5). At the beginning of 2003 he reached a round of 16 at the World Cup . In May 2003 he took part in the World Cup for the first time . With 4-0 victories against Maksym Kolischuk and Sjarhej Bratchuk he survived the preliminary round with ease , but in the round of 32 there was a 1: 5 defeat against Vladimir Petuschkow . At the EM 2003 he was eliminated in the round of 16 against the eventual European champion Kirill Anishchenko (4: 5) and at the EM 2004 he lost in the quarter-finals against Oleksandr Palamar . The 2004 World Cup was played in the knockout system from the start and Baklachyan had to admit defeat to World Cup debutant Vasily Lazarev (3: 5) in the first round .

In 2005 Baklachyan won two tournaments of the Russian Open Cup. Another win and a second place followed a year later. At the end of the year he came 17th in the Russian Defense Minister's Cup. In June 2007 he retired from the Prince Open in the round of 16. A little later he secured his first title at the Grand Prix of the Cities of Eurasia when he defeated the Ukrainian Yaroslav Tarnovetskyj 6-3 in the final of the Moscow Cup, the fourth tournament of the year . In October 2007 he won his first World Championship medal at the first ever Dynamic Pyramid World Championship ; he reached the semifinals and had to admit defeat to eventual world champion Kanybek Sagynbajew 2: 7. A month later he also came third at the World Cup in the Free Pyramid ; after winning against defending champion Pawel Mechowow , among others , he was eliminated in the semifinals against the 2005 winner, Yuri Pashchinsky ( 5-6 ).

In 2008 he won two tournaments of the Odon Cup and finished 25th in the Kremlin Cup . In November 2008 he won the Minin Pozharsky Cup in Vladimir . A few days later, Baklachyan achieved his greatest success at the Free Pyramid World Cup in Saint Petersburg . After losing his opening game to Daniil Boguschewski 3-5 , he moved into the final for the first time with six wins in a row, including against Andrei Freise , Dmitri Bajew and Jewhen Palamar . In the final against Russian Pawel Mechowow he was able to turn a 1: 4 deficit into a 5: 4 lead. Then Mechowow secured two more games and came close to the title except for one game. Baklachyan managed to turn things around again, so that he prevailed 7: 6 and became the first Armenian to win a billiards world championship.

After the world championship, Baklachyan, who had been living in Moscow for some time , returned to his native Armenia and took a break from billiards. It was not until October 2009 that he played in tournaments again. He was seeded in the round of 16 at the Kremlin Cup and lost this against Daniil Boguschewski. At the invitation tournament, the glorious eight , he was eliminated in the semifinals against Yuri Pashchinsky. After another long break, he took part in an international tournament for the last time at the Kremlin Cup at the end of 2011 and was eliminated in the round of 64 against Dmitri Storoshenko .
