Oleksandr Viktorovych Palamar ( Ukrainian Олександр Вікторович Паламарь ; born March 30, 1987 in Kharkiv , Ukrainian SSR ) is a Ukrainian billiards player . In 2007 he became world champion in the combined pyramid , a discipline of Russian billiards .

Career

Oleksandr Palamar began playing billiards six months after his older brother Jewhen and initially played mainly with him. He first took part in a tournament at the age of eleven. He achieved his first major success in 2002 when he reached the finals of the Indepence Cup. In the same year he reached the round of 32 at the European Championships in the Free Pyramid . In 2003 he took part in the World Cup for the first time and reached the sixteenth-finals, in which he was defeated by his compatriot Jurij Tarasjuk . At the EM he reached the quarter-finals in 2003 and the final in 2004, but he lost 5-1 to Kanybek Sagyndykow . Four months later he reached the semifinals of the Caucasus Cup. At the 2004 World Cup , he was eliminated again in the round of 32. In March 2005 he won a European Cup for the first time in Dnipro with a final victory over Ihor Hubarjew . He also reached the quarter-finals of the European Championship and the final of the Asian Cup in 2005, which he lost to Jaroslaw Wynokur 5-7 . In November 2005 he won the Vitaly Massol Cup with a 9: 7 win in the final against Oleksandr Boyko . A little later he was defeated at the 2005 World Cup in the fourth losing round to eventual world champion Yuri Pashchinsky after a 3-0 lead 3: 4 and thus just missed out on the round of 16.

In May 2006, Palamar became European champions with a 7-5 win against Seymur Məmmədov . Three months later he won his second European Cup victory in Kiev in the final against Pawel Mechowow . In December 2006 he came at the World Cup for the first time beyond the round of 32. After defeating Kanybek Sagyndykow, Seymur Məmmədov and Eduard Galijanz , among others , he moved into the final, in which he had to admit defeat to Russian Pawel Mechowow 5-7 despite a 5-3 lead. In April 2007 he reached the final of the first ever World Cup in the Combined Pyramid , where he defeated the Kyrgyz Kanybek Sagynbajew 7: 6. After Jaroslaw Wynokur, he was the second Ukrainian to win a billiards world championship. A few weeks later he succeeded in defending his title at the European Championships in the Free Pyramid in the final against Yuri Pashchinsky. In the summer of 2007 he reached the semi-finals of the open Asian Cup and won the Indepence Cup and a European Cup tournament for the third time. In October 2007 he moved into the final at the first edition of the world championship in the Dynamic Pyramid , in which, however, he had to admit defeat to the Kyrgyz Sagynbayev 5-7. A month later he was eliminated from the Free Pyramid in the round of 16.

At the beginning of 2008, the sixteenth finals followed at the World Cup in the Combined Pyramid . A little later he reached the semi-finals of the European Championship as well as the finals of the Asian Championship and the Ukrainian Championship in the Dynamic Pyramid . At the Free Pyramid World Cup in 2008 he made it to the semi-finals and lost 6-1 to Pawel Mechowow. Also at the World Cup in the Combined Pyramid in 2009 he made it to the semifinals and was eliminated from the eventual world champion Aues Jeljubajew . A few weeks after he won his fourth tournament in the European Cup and finished second in the Ukrainian Cup, Palamar became European champion for the third time in October 2009 by beating his compatriot Jaroslaw Tarnovezkyj 7-2 in the final . At the World Cup in the Free Pyramid he lost again in the semifinals in 2009, this time against Kanybek Sagynbajew. Shortly afterwards he won the European Cup final for the first time.

After he had reached the semi-finals three times in a row at World Championships, Palamar was eliminated in the Combined Pyramid in 2010 in the quarter-finals against Ikram Akhmetov and in the Free Pyramid in the second round against Pawel Kusmin . At the EM 2010 he was defeated in the semifinals to the later European champion Andrei Freise . In February 2011 he made it into a World Cup final for the fourth time: he lost his second final in the Combined Pyramid after 2007 with 3: 6 against Nikita Liwada . Shortly afterwards he won a world cup tournament for the first time in the final against Wladislaw Osminin . At the EM 2011 he was eliminated in the round of 16. At the Asian Cup in 2011 he reached the semi-finals. Four months later he lost to the eventual world champion, his compatriot Jaroslaw Wynokur, at the World Cup in the Free Pyramid in the round of 16. In 2012 he reached the quarter-finals in the Combined Pyramid at the World Cup and was eliminated in the last 64 of the Free Pyramid . In the dynamic pyramid he again reached the quarter-finals.

In February 2013, Palamar moved into the semi-finals of the World Cup in the Combined Pyramid for the fourth time and lost to eventual world champion Jaroslaw Tarnowezkyj. Four months later he was eliminated for the first time since 2005 at a World Cup in the preliminary round when he suffered his second defeat in the dynamic pyramid in the third preliminary round game. In September 2013, the first round of the Free Pyramid World Cup followed . The following year he again achieved better World Cup results. After reaching the round of 16 in the Combined Pyramid and the sixteenth finals in the Dynamic Pyramid , he moved into the World Cup final for the second time in the Free Pyramid , in which he had to admit defeat to the Moldovan Sergei Kryzhanovsky 5-7 .

In 2015 Palamar reached the round of 32 at the World Cup in the Combined Pyramid and the quarter-finals at the European Championship in the Free Pyramid. In December 2015 he was eliminated from the World Cup in the Free Pyramid , his last World Cup participation so far, in the round of 16 with 4-7 against Kazakhs Älichan Qaranejew . A year later, Palamar won the final tournament of the Ukrainian Cup with a 7-3 final win over Mark Pleschko .

After he was eliminated early in 2017 at the Kremlin Cup , the Savvidi Cup and the Ukrainian championship in the Free Pyramid , Palamar achieved at least a fifth place again at the Empire Cup 2018. At the Savvidi Cup 2018 , however, a first round followed.

At the beginning of 2019, Palamar won the Champions Cup in Moscow by beating Yuri Pashchinsky 6-4 in the final . At the Kremlin Cup 2019 , however, he was eliminated again in the round of 128. In October 2019 he was one of the 16 players at the Savvidi Cup who were seeded in the sixteenth finals. In the round of 32 he was defeated by the Uzbek Nodirbek Mirzayev .

His older brother Jewhen Palamar is also a pool player. At the 2008 World Cup , they both finished third.
