Dieter Johns (born  January 18, 1970 ) is a German - American pool player . He became German champion in the 14/1 endless discipline in 1998 and third in the world championship in 9-ball in 1999 .

In addition, he is one of the few non- CIS players who regularly take part in world championships in Russian billiards . His best result so far was reaching the round of 16 at the 2013 World Cup in the Dynamic Pyramid discipline .

Career

Pool

Johns won his first medal at the German championship in 1990 when he reached the final in 8-ball and was defeated by defending champion Thomas Engert . Two years later he reached the final in 9-ball , in which he lost to Ralf Souquet , and was third in 14/1 endless . In 1993 he became runner-up in 14/1 after a final defeat against Oliver Ortmann . Further finals followed in 1995 in 9-Ball against Francisco Bustamante and in 1996 in 9-Ball against Thomas Engert. After taking third place in the 8-ball in 1997 , he made it into the final for the sixth time in 1998 and was victorious there for the first time. He prevailed endlessly against Thorsten Hohmann in 14/1 and became German champion. In the same year and a year later , he secured two more bronze medals in the 9-ball.

In early 1999, Johns achieved his only two podium finishes on the Euro Tour . At the Portugal Open he reached the final and lost to Ralf Souquet. At the following tournament, the Turkey Open 1999 , he came in third place. In December 1999 he reached the semi-finals of the 9-ball world championship in Alicante, Spain . After defeating Hsiao Lang-fong (13:11) and Rico Diks (13: 7), among others , he had to admit defeat to eventual world champion Nick Varner 8:13 in the semifinals . In 2002 Johns reached seventeenth place at the Munich Open on the IBC Tour . In 2006 he made it to the finals again on the Euro Tour, but in the round of sixteen of the Czech Open he lost to Huidji See (7: 9).

In July 2015, Johns took part in a professional tournament for the first time in nine years. At the World 14.1 Tournament in New York , he won five of his six games in the group stage, defeating Mika Immonen , among others . In the double knockout phase he managed an opening win against Kevin Clark (150: 92), but then retired after defeats against Corey Deuel (144: 150) and the eventual tournament winner Thorsten Hohmann (64: 150) .

In the 1998/99 season Johns was German team champion with the 1st PBC Fulda . He currently plays for PBC Hürth-Berrenrath . After several years in the 1st Bundesliga , the team was relegated to the 2nd Bundesliga in seventh place in the 2011/12 season . In the following season , the team succeeded in direct promotion. After three more top division years, relegation followed again in 2016 . After the 2016/17 season, in which he was the best player on his team in the individual standings for the third time in a row, Johns moved to the club's second team. With the team he reached first place in the regional league in the 2017/18 season. However, since the first team occupied a relegation zone, both teams remained in their leagues.

Russian billiards

In Russian billiards , Dieter Johns competes for the USA and is usually the only representative of his country.

In June 2000, the World Cup of the Free Pyramid discipline was held in Kirkel . There Johns was eliminated in the first round against Oliver Ortmann (3: 6). Two years later he reached the round of 32 in Willingen after winning the preliminary round against Roman Hybler and Marat Kassajew , in which he was defeated 1: 4 by the Russian Pawel Mechowow . In 2004 he was eliminated in the round of 32 against Niazi Khalafov (2: 5) after his first-round opponent failed to play.

In May 2006 he took part in the European Championship for the first time , in which he reached the round of 16 with wins against Gennadiy Lapatchenka (4: 2) and Kanybek Sagynbajew (4: 1), in which he was defeated by later European champion Oleksandr Palamar with 1: 5. A little later he retired from the Asian Open Cup in the preliminary round. At the 2006 World Cup , he reached the round of 32, in which he lost to Oleksandr Palamar (3: 5).

At the Asian Cup in 2007 he reached the round of 32 , in which he lost to Älichan Qaranejew (2: 5). In the same year he took part in the first edition of the World Cup in the Dynamic Pyramid in Saint Petersburg and was eliminated with one win and two losses in the preliminary round. In 2008, his first participation in the World Championship of the Combined Pyramid in Almaty ended without a win in the preliminary round after defeats against Jaroslaw Wynokur (0: 4) and Aljaksandr Kaszjukawez (1: 4). Even a year later he remained without a win. At the Asian Cup he made it into the round of 16 for the first time in 2009, but was clearly defeated by Kazakhs Shamal Shumaniyazov (0: 5).

In October 2010 the Free Pyramid World Cup took place in Germany for the third time, the venue was again Willingen. After an opening defeat against Aues Jeljubajew (2: 5), Johns defeated Sergei Lisnik (5: 2) and Dmitri Kirillow (5: 2). However, he lost his fourth round game against Maxim Pan (2: 5) and just missed the final round. In 2011, Johns played two world championships and was eliminated in both the combined pyramid and the free pyramid in the preliminary round, in the free pyramid he won at least one preliminary round. At the beginning of 2012, Johns lost to the eventual winner Jaroslaw Wynokur (1: 7) in the first round of the presidential cup of the Russian republic Tatarstan . In the same year he retired from both World Cup participations ( combined pyramid , dynamic pyramid ) without a win in the preliminary round.

After suffering a close first round loss to Oleg Schigimont (5: 6) at the Combined Pyramid World Cup in 2013 , Johns also lost his opening game at the Dynamic Pyramid World Cup in July 2013 , this time against Nikita Zisselski (1: 5). He then fought his way through the preliminary round, which was played in the double knockout system , with narrow wins against Ajubchon Temirchonow (5: 3), Mykyta Wolyk (5: 4) and Ulukman Karagulow (5: 4) and drew for the first time into the last sixteen, in which he had to admit defeat to the Kyrgyz Dastan Lepschakow 3: 6. In September the Free Pyramid World Cup was followed by another first round (4-7 against Sergei Kurmanajew ).

In his sixth participation in the World Cup in the Combined Pyramid , Johns won a game for the first time in 2015. After a 1: 5 opening defeat against Sailan Adamow , he narrowly prevailed against Tofik Kuliev (5: 4). However , he lost the decisive third group game against Temirlan Kuscherow 2: 5, which meant that he missed the entry into the final round. A year later , the World Cup was played again in the knockout system and Johns lost in the first round to the Turkmen Batyr Geldyjew (3: 6).

When in December 1995 the German Open in Frankfurt am Main was the first world ranking tournament of the Snooker Main Tour to be held in Germany , Johns received one of the four wildcards. In the wildcard round, however, he clearly had to admit defeat to Englishman Mark King 5-0.
