The locomotives of the Norwegian steam locomotive series NHJ A " were sold in 1910, 1913 and 1916 by Thunes mekaniske and Hamar Jernstøberi by Norsk Hoved-Jernbane (NHJ).
When NHJ was taken over on March 4, 1926 as Oslo district in Norges Statsbaner (NSB), the state railway company in Norway, the locomotives came into their stock.
The series consisted of five locomotives, which were mainly used for passenger trains.
Used by Norsk Hoved-Jernbane
As early as the mid-1860s, the NHJ and NSB were working closely together and sorting their standard gauge locomotives into a common numbering system. Therefore, when NSB took over the locomotives in 1926, no numbers had to be changed.
NHJ A "
Between 1851 and 1870 the NHJ A series was manned by Robert Stephenson with a total of nine locomotives.
Around 1900 NSB and NHJ started classifying their locomotives. NSB chose numbers, while NHJ chose letters to designate the series. When the company's new series overview was introduced in 1900, these machines were actually assigned to the new NHJ J series . A redesignation did not take place, during their operating time the locomotives only had the number designations 1 to 5, 11 and 12.
Therefore, at the time of procurement, the series designation was free again and the five locomotives received the series designation with a second occupation.
Locomotives No. 1 to 3 were ordered from Thune on April 29, 1910 and handed over to operations between July and November 1911 with construction numbers 48 to 50. No. 4 was ordered from Hamar on July 11, 1913 ; it was first used as construction number 92 on August 24, 1914 for NHJ. No. 5 was ordered in March 1916, but with the construction number 119 it was not delivered until three years later in September 1919.
NSB type 45a
When NSB took over the series in 1926, it was given the new series designation NSB 45a .
No. 3 was used in 1940 in the Trondheim district, returned to Oslo in 1941 and was used in the Drammen district from September 1949. It remained there until it was retired as the first locomotive in the series on February 22, 1955. Nos. 1, 2 and 5 were handed over to Drammen in 1951 from the Oslo district . No. 4 had already been in use there since 1949. All four locomotives were retired on December 28, 1958 and then scrapped.
