The church is dedicated to St. Nicholas , the patronage is celebrated on December 5th every year. The hll. Nikolaus and Theodul are the patron saints of the Walser who populated the Laternsertal in the Middle Ages .

history

The church in Thal is the oldest church in the Laternsertal. In 1411 a small chapel in honor of St. Nicholas was inaugurated by the Vicar General of the Bishop of Chur. This had to give way to a larger church at the end of the 15th century, which was given its purpose on May 7, 1502. A branch of the Rankweil parish was established here as early as 1452.

In 1611 the elevation to the status of an independent parish and the first expansion and reconstruction of the church took place. Some of the wooden figures come from Erasmus Kern . In 1645 the church tower was badly damaged by a lightning strike and two children were fatally injured. In 1673 the existing church was expanded and redesigned in baroque style. In 1892/1893 it was enlarged and comprehensively restored according to plans by Johann Marggraff . At the request of Pastor Franz Schratz (1891-1894), the church was enlarged, de-Baroque, regothic and restored, with the stonemason and master builder being carried out by Fidel Kröner .

In 1956 the church was renovated and changed again. During the renovation in 1999, these changes were often traced back to the condition in 1892.

location

The church ( 921  m above sea level ) forms part of the center of the village of Thal and architecturally dominates the place. The church is located on the parcel “St. Nikolaus ”and is located directly on Laternserstraße (L 51). The directly adjoining cemetery is located to the southwest and southeast of the church building .

architecture

The neo-Gothic church building is formed by a nave with a gable roof and a retracted Gothic 3/8 choir. The nave with choir is about 31 m long and 10 m wide. The nave is about 13 m high.

An attached tower with a height of about 27 m connects to the choir with a low saddle roof to the northeast. The nave and choir have pointed arch windows. The choir arch is pointed upwards ( pointed arch ) and with a choir arch crucifix in the middle, with lavish painting. The floor in the interior is tiled.

The church is oriented from northwest to southeast (choir).

Furnishing

A statue of St. Theodul from the 15th century and a depiction of St. Mary on the right of the neo-Gothic high altar remind of the origin of the ancestors of the inhabitants of the Laternsertal, the Walser . Nicholas left on the high altar. On the outside of the church you can see two inset stones from Sion and on the front a black serpentine from 1892 with the inscription “GOTT ZUM GRUSS - AVS DER OLTEN HEIMAT VALLIS”.

The high altar comes from Fidelis Rudhardt, who created it in 1892 when the church was being extended. In the shrine there is a late Gothic group depicting the coronation of Mary. The burst adorns the figure of St. Mauritius by Fidelius Rudhardt, who also created the two tabernacles. Below the cafeteria there is a relic of St. Modestus .

In the middle of the presbytery is a sandstone altar by the sculptor Albrecht Zauner, which was created for the recent renovation. The slightly curved cafeteria rests on five pillars - a symbol of the wounds of Jesus. The ambo to the left of the altar is also one of the artist's creations. On the north wall behind the ambo is the sacrament house made of gray sandstone with the year 1509, which is decorated with the coats of arms of Austria (double-headed eagle) and Montfort as well as with stonemasons. On the east wall of the parish church, two glass paintings depict the saints Silvester and Aloysius.

In the foremost window on the right side there is a small pane with the picture of Immaculata from 1507. In the choir there is a glass painting with St. New Year's Eve and right with St. Aloysius (both around 1892). The donors are named in the lower bars of the church windows.

The font also dates from around 1507, although the essay by Fidelis Rudhardt was only created in 1892. Side altars are installed in front of the choir arch.

The red, wooden ceiling (plafond) in the shape of a cassette with paintings dates from 1892 and it contains five pictures by Alfons Luger (1901).

In 1895 the Mayer brothers in Feldkirch Altenstadt built the first pneumatic organ in Vorarlberg for the parish church .
