The Norwegian steam locomotive series NHJ A 1 " was imported from the USA by Baldwin in 1919 through Norsk Hoved-Jernbane (NHJ) .

When the NHJ was taken over on March 4, 1926 as the Oslo district in the Norges Statsbaner (NSB), the state railway company in Norway, the locomotives came into their stock.

The series consisted of two locomotives that were mainly used for passenger trains.

Used by Norsk Hoved-Jernbane

As early as the mid-1860s, the NHJ and NSB were working closely together and sorting their standard gauge locomotives into a common numbering system. Therefore, when NSB took over the locomotives in 1926, no numbers had to be changed.

NHJ A 1 "

In 1870 the class NHJ A 1 was occupied by two locomotives from Robert Stephenson .

Around 1900 NSB and NHJ started classifying their locomotives. NSB chose numbers, while NHJ chose letters to designate the series. When the company's new series overview was introduced in 1900, these machines were actually assigned to the new NHJ J series. A redesignation did not take place, during their operating time the locomotives only had the number designations 22 and 23.

Therefore, at the time of procurement, the series designation was free again and the two Baldwin locomotives were given a second crew.

NSB type 46a

When NSB took over the series in 1926, it was given the new series designation NSB Type 46a .

The locomotives had problems with generating the steam pressure necessary to move trains throughout their life. That is why they were quickly handed over to subordinate services and used in the work train or shunting service, and also as a reserve.

No. 16 was used in the Oslo district from 1920, passed on to the Trondheim district in 1947, withdrawn on October 20, 1948 and retired on February 17, 1949; No. 15, which was only used in the Oslo district, was withdrawn on September 28, 1953 and retired on June 26, 1954. Both locomotives were scrapped.
