The Sandnes is a Norwegian motor ship built in 1950 that was used on the night route ( Norwegian Nattruten ) Sandnes / Stavanger - Haugesund - Bergen until 1974 . Night route

The construction of the ship was commissioned by Sandnæs Dampskibs-Aktieselskab (SDA) at Nylands mekaniske Verksted in Oslo at the end of the 1940s . This was at a time when the Norwegian shipping companies had a strong need for new ships as a result of the war and heavy wear and tear on the ships that were still available in the post-war period. The SDA was in competition with Det Stavangerske Dampskibsselskab (DSD) and wanted to outdo them with a ship that was outstanding in technology and equipment; Accordingly, no expense or expense was spared in building the Sandnes . After the delivery in March 1950, the DSD actually came to the conclusion that it had nothing to counter the Sandnes , entered into a cooperation with the SDA and converted a former warship into the passenger ship Stavanger as an inexpensive solution . The striking green Sandnes was called “the most beautiful one on the coast”, attracted international attention and influenced the design of later ships, including the Hurtigrute .

After setting the night route

In 1974 the night route, which was becoming increasingly unprofitable due to more modern offers (speedboats, developed roads and aircraft for passengers, containers for freight), was discontinued. The Sandnes was sold to Simon Møkster, who renamed her Vikingfjord and used it as a lodging ship in connection with the construction of drilling platforms in Vestlandet . In 1977 the Rogaland videregående sjøaspirantskole acquired the ship and used it as a training ship under the name Gann . In this function and with this name it was replaced by the former Ragnvald Jarl in 1995 . The ship was sold to Sørlandets Maritime Videregående Skole , where it was named Sjøkurs and continued to serve as a training ship. After the Rogaland videregående sjøaspirantskole received a new Gann in 2007 with the former Narvik , the Sørlandets Maritime Videregående Skole again took over the older training ship, which means that the former Ragnvald Jarl is now called Sjøkurs and the former Sjøkurs , i.e. the original Sandnes , was for sale . It was acquired by Ryfylke Dampskibsselskab based in Stavanger and placed under protection by the Norwegian monument protection authority Riksantikvaren as a veteranskip .

Traditional ship

The Sandnes has got its original green paintwork and name back. It is used for special occasions and for charter tours with a capacity of 180 passengers in 82 cabins.
