Pipervika is the name of a bay and a former neighborhood in Oslo , Norway .
The Bay
Pipervika Bay is located in the inner Oslofjord between the peninsula in the northeast with Akershus Fortress and Aker Brygge , the former site of the Akers shipyard in the southwest. Today is located on the northern shore of the Bay of Town Hall Square with the Rådhusbryggen , numerous investors for ferries (after Nesodden ) and excursion boats, and a small museum harbor . One of the two cruise terminals in the Norwegian capital is located in the northeast of the bay, directly below Akershus Fortress.
The former district
Until the end of the 19th century, the name Pipervika also referred to the district of Oslo along this bay . This was a tightly built-up, very poor neighborhood on swampy ground with numerous wooden houses and poor infrastructure. While individual buildings were gradually demolished and replaced from the middle of the 19th century, renovation work began in this district in the 1930s and the existing buildings were completely demolished. The church in the district, the Pipervikskirken, also fell victim to this demolition in 1959 . Today there is, among other things, the striking Oslo City Hall with the City Hall Square in front of it.
The name
The name Pipervika is derived from the members of the various music corps of the nearby fortress stationed on the shore of the bay. The Pipere , were the musicians with woodwind instruments . In medieval maps and records, this bay is called Gyljandi Bay.
