Incat
Incat , fully Incat Tasmania is an Australian manufacturer of high-speed catamaran in aluminum construction. The company, which was founded in 1977 as International Catamarans , is based in Derwent Park (near Hobart in Tasmania ). In 1988 International Catamarans was renamed Incat Tasmania .
The company builds catamarans for civil and military purposes with a length of up to 112 m and service speeds of up to 40 knots (approx. 75 km / h). Various buildings of the company won the Blue Ribbon for fastest Atlantic crossings during record journeys for advertising purposes , but normal areas of use are shorter ferry routes in passenger and car ferry services.
Civil operators in Europe use Incat ferries to operate routes in the English Channel , Kattegat and the Strait of Gibraltar . Military operators are, for example, the Australian naval forces and the United States Navy , which use these ships in East Timor and in the Iraq war.
At the end of the 1990s Incat found itself in serious financial difficulties, which were finally resolved with the help of several new construction contracts from Europe, Asia and the USA (US Navy). The consolidation also contributed to the fact that many other competitors had to give up and today only Austal , another Australian shipyard, also offers large aluminum catamarans.
