The GNV Azzurra is a ferry of the Italian shipping company Grandi Navi Veloci (GNV).

The ship was used by the Norwegian shipping company Color Line until 2007 . In October 2007 it was sold to Italy. From 2008 the ferry was used on the route between Civitavecchia and Olbia . Then it operated between Genoa and Porto Torres and now between Bari and Durrës . The GNV Azzurra has a sister ship, the Rigel II , which is currently used on the same route.

history

Gotland

The ship was built in 1981 as Gotland by Öresundsvarvet in Landskrona ( Sweden ) for the shipping company AB Gotland . However, the ferry was chartered by Oy Vasa-Umeå AB before leaving for the first time and was named Wasa Star . There she operated the route Sundsvall and Vaasa or Umeå and took up service on June 25, 1981.

In 1983 the ferry was to be chartered by the Greek shipping company Karageorgis Line , but this failed due to payment disagreements.

Peter Wessel

As Peter Wessel in the port of Larvik

So the ship was finally sold to Larvik Line , which operated as A / S Larvik-Frederikshavn Ferjen until 1988, and served as their fourth ship under the name Peter Wessel , which they received in March 1984, their traditional route between Larvik in Norway and Frederikshavn in Denmark . The ship was named after the Norwegian sea hero Peter Wessel Tordenskiold . Their home port was Larvik.

In 1988 the ferry was rebuilt at the Blohm + Voss shipyard in Hamburg and lengthened by 22.5 m. Additional cabins were installed during the renovation. The passenger capacity of the ship increased from 2,072 to 2,100 passengers and the number of beds from 1,142 to 1,818. The number of vehicles to be transported has also increased, from 510 to 570 cars.

Since 1997 the ferry has been in the service of Color Line , which took over the route and the Peter Wessel from Larvik Line . Since April 2006 it has been operating between Larvik and the Danish port of Hirtshals . In April 2008 the ferry was replaced on its route by the Christian IV , which was followed by the SuperSpeed 2 in June 2008 .

SNAV Toscana

On October 19, 2007, Color Line signed a contract with the MSC shipping company to sell the Peter Wessel . The purchase price was 25 million euros, or around 200 million Norwegian kroner. The ship has been used by SNAV since 2008 under the name SNAV Toscana in the Mediterranean and serves the route between Genoa and Porto Torres in the summer season .

In winter the ferry is used repeatedly as a floating hotel or accommodation. In February 2014 it was used in Sochi for the Winter Olympics. From March to May 2015 it served as accommodation in the Shetlands for workers who installed a gas processing plant there. For the winter of 2015/2016 it was checked whether it could be used as refugee accommodation for the state of Schleswig-Holstein , but it was actually used as a ferry between Bari and Durrës . In September 2016 there was a deployment in Cádiz to accommodate the crew of the Disney Wonder docked there . In September 2017 she was used in Tarragona and Barcelona to accommodate officers from the National Police and the Guardia Civil. From April 29, 2020, she was used as a quarantine ship in the port of Trieste for infected residents of old people's homes in the Friuli-Venezia Giulia region during the Corona crisis.

Incidents

As Peter Wessel in Larvikfjord

As Wasa Star , the ferry ran aground on February 14, 1982 off Holmsund . Leakages in the tanks required repairs in Helsingfors and finally a final repair in Kiel at HDW .

On June 27, 1986, the Peter Wessel collided east of Skagen with the Sydfjord , a Panamanian ship, which then sank. The crew of this ship was saved by the Peter Wessel .

At around 6:40 am on March 22, 2007, a fire broke out in a control panel. The passengers were summoned to one of the restaurants on board. According to the shipping company, there was no danger for them. A crew member was flown in a helicopter to Aalborg for medical treatment due to smoke inhalation. The ferry was towed into the port of Frederikshavn , which it reached on the morning of the following day. It was only able to resume service on April 26, 2007 after extensive repairs to the on-board electrical system.
