Holmsund is 18 kilometers south of Umeå , the capital of Umeå municipality. There is a regular ferry connection with the Finnish city of Vaasa . Holmsund has had a rail connection since 1922, when a connection between Vännäs on the main Stockholm - Boden line (Stambanan genom övre Norrland) and Umeå, which had existed since 1896, was extended. Since the opening of the Botniabanan in 2010, Holmsund has been connected to the newly built Umeå östra (Umeå Ost) station; from Umeå there has only been freight traffic since 1988.
Holmsund lives mainly from the wood and paper industry, whereby the place is one of the transhipment points in the region because of its port. The Swedish company Svenska Cellulosa Aktiebolaget operates a cellulose factory in town.
The IFK Holmsund football team achieved national fame when they played a season in Allsvenskan in 1967 .
