Kjell-Olof Feldt

Kjell-Olof Feldt (born August 18, 1931 in Holmsund ) is a Swedish social democratic politician . From 1982 to 1990 he was Minister of Finance of Sweden . Feldt played a central role in Swedish politics in the 1980s alongside Olof Palme and Ingvar Carlsson . Under Feldt there were major changes in Swedish social democratic economic policy. Feldt's economic policy is associated with the concept of the third way.

biography

Kjell-Olof Feldt was born to Alexander Felt and Irma Jonsson. He studied at Uppsala University . Later he was office manager in the Ministry of Finance, budget chief in 1965 and state secretary in 1967. Here he was already connected to Palme and the former Finance Minister Gunnar Sträng . On October 9, 1970, he became Minister of Commerce, succeeding Gunnar Lange . In 1970 he married Freiin Birgitta von Otter.

Minister of Commerce

Feldt was Minister of Commerce in the Palme I government from 1970 to 1975, and Deputy Minister of Finance from 1975 to 1976. Feldt led Sweden to the trade agreement of November 10, 1970 with the European Community, in which closer ties to the EC were agreed while maintaining Swedish neutrality. Sweden withdrew from this treaty on March 18, 1971, but Sweden entered into a free trade agreement with the EC in 1972 .

Just like the then Education Minister Ingvar Carlsson , Feldt criticized Sträng's economic policy. In 1973 he suggested that the employer's tax should be dropped for companies with fewer than 100 employees. That will u. a. considered significant for the generation change in Swedish social democratic politics.

In the opposition

After the Reichstag election in September 1976 , Feldt was only a member of the Reichstag. During this time he was a member of the finance committee of the Swedish parliament. In April 1981 (at that time Thorbjörn Fälldin ( Center Party ) was Prime Minister) Feldt negotiated with members of the bourgeois government Fälldin II about aspects of their economic policy.

Finance minister

After the Reichstag election in 1982 , Feldt became Minister of Finance in the Palme II government . After the murder of Olof Palme in February 1986, Ingvar Carlsson became Prime Minister; Feldt was Finance Minister in the Carlsson I cabinet (March 1986 to February 1990).
