The 1978 DHB Cup was the fourth edition of the men's handball cup competition. The final took place on June 16, 1978 in front of about 3000 spectators in the Gießen-Ost sports hall in Gießen . After 1977, VfL Gummersbach won the final again .

32 teams from the Bundesliga, the Regionalliga (= 2nd league), the Oberliga (= 3rd league, in Berlin: Stadtliga) and the regional association below the Oberliga competed against each other in the knockout system . A main round was held. This was followed by the further playout in eighth, quarter and half finals as well as a final.

The final game for the DHB Cup was played on June 16, 1978 between VfL Gummersbach and TV 05/07 Hüttenberg in front of about 3000 spectators in the Gießen-Ost sports hall in Gießen . The trophy was secured for the second time in the club's history and again after 1977 the team from VfL Gummersbach, who defeated the team from TV 05/07 Hüttenberg 14:11.
