history

In 1940 the building was erected as a production hall for Polysius AG. The hall later served as a warehouse for the Dessau cement plant construction. The sports fans of the company sports association ZAB Dessau successfully pushed for their own sports facility. From 1964 to 1965, athletes and employees converted the arched hall into the ZAB hall. The first construction phase was completed on February 17, 1965. After the work was completed, the hall had 1,800 seats. In 1974 the hall was the venue for four matches of the men's handball world championship in the GDR .

On May 15, 2000, the extensive renovation work began at a cost of 5.5 million euros . On February 24, 2002, what was then known as the sports hall on Robert-Bosch-Straße was officially opened with a pole vault meeting.

The name was given in March 2002 at an international handball match between Germany and Switzerland . The last international match played in Dessau, in which the German men's national handball team defeated Sweden , took place in December 2006.
