Dmitri Valeryevich Schitnikow ( Russian Дмитрий Валерьевич Житников ; born November 20, 1989 in Zvolen , Czechoslovakia ) is a Russian handball player .

The right-handed person, who is 1.85 m tall and weighs 83 kg, is mainly used in the position of the middle rear area. He started playing handball in Krasnodar when he was eight. At the age of 15 he moved to the second team of the Russian series champion Medvedi Chekhov . From 2010 he played in the first team, with which he became champions in 2011, 2012, 2013, 2014 and 2015 and cup winners in 2011, 2012, 2013 and 2015. From 2015 he played in Poland for Wisła Płock . He has been under contract with the Hungarian club Pick Szeged since summer 2017 . With Szeged he won the Hungarian Championship in 2018 and the Hungarian Cup in 2019.

Although he was born in Czechoslovakia, the son of a Russian handball coach plays for Russia. In the run-up to the 2012 European Championship , he made his debut in the Russian national team and was part of the extended squad. He took part in the 2013 World Cup in Spain , as well as the 2014 European Championships in Denmark and 2016 in Poland.

Dmitri Shitnikov is married and has a master's degree from the Russian State University of Physical Education, Sport, Youth and Tourism in Moscow.
