Amir Ali-Akbari (born December 11, 1987 ) is an Iranian wrestler . He became 2010 world light heavyweight champion in the Greco-Roman style .

Career

Amir Ali-Akbari, who has been wrestling since 2000, belongs to the Shahria Tehran club and is trained there by Nasser Nurbash. The 1.92 meter tall athlete competes in the light heavyweight division, but due to his size it can be assumed that he will soon switch entirely to the heavyweight division, in which he was already active. It starts exclusively in the Greco-Roman style.

He achieved his first major success on the international wrestling mat in 2007 when he was junior world champion in Beijing in the middleweight division. But he did not make the jump to the 2008 Olympic Games in Beijing because of the strong competition in his own country.

But since 2009 he has been the best Iranian light heavyweight wrestler. This was already evident at the Asian Championship in Pattaya in 2009 , where he won the title ahead of Margulan Assembekow from Kazakhstan and Anil Kumar from India . At the 2009 World Championships in Herning / Denmark he achieved a total of four victories, only losing to the eventual world champion Balázs Kiss from Hungary in the semi-finals and thus won his first medal at a world championship in the senior division, the bronze.

The 2010 World Championships in Moscow were the culmination of his career so far . There he won the light heavyweight division with victories over Dawid Saldadze , Ukraine, Mohamad Abd El Fatah , Egypt , Kalojan Dinchew , Bulgaria, the Olympic champion Aslanbek Kushtov , Russia and Timofei Deinichenko , Belarus in a superior style the world title.

In 2011, Amir Ali-Akbari was caught during a doping training test and suspended for two years until July 10, 2013. After his suspension, he started in 2013 at the Universiade in Kazan in the heavyweight division and reached the final battle there, which he lost against Rıza Kayaalp from Turkey. But it was already evident there that he had developed further and belongs to the absolute world leaders, also in the new weight class. At the 2013 World Cup he proved this in an impressive way, because he defeated Oleksandr Tschernezkyj , Ukraine, Eduard Popp , Germany, Rıza Kayaalp and Heiki Nabi , Estonia and became the new world champion. One can only hope that this success has been achieved in an honest manner.

Unfortunately, this hope turned out to be a fallacy, because when checking the doping test that he had to hand in at the World Cup, it was found that Amir Ali-Akbari had been doped again. The world wrestling federation FILA then revoked his world championship title in 2013 and banned him for life.
