Career

Eduard Popp came to Germany in his youth and began wrestling at VfL Neckargartach . As an adult, he weighs around 130 kg at a height of 1.90 meters and starts in the heavyweight division. He focuses on the Greco-Roman style. He is or was mainly trained by Markus Makamul and Michael Carl. He is married and has two children. He was commercial. Employee, but now belongs to a sports promotion group of the Bundeswehr. In the Ringer Bundesliga he wrestles for the Red Devils Heilbronn .

In the junior division, Eduard Popp won the German championship title in 2005 (B-Youth), 2007 and 2008 (A-Youth) and 2011 (Juniors) (weight classes up to 100 kg and up to 120 kg body weight).

In the senior class, he first started in 2011 at a German championship. He took 4th place in the weight class up to 120 kg. In 2012 he came third in the same weight class at the German championship behind Nico Schmidt, RSV Frankfurt (Oder) and Ralf Böhringer, VfK Schifferstadt. Eduard Popp became German champion in 2013 (up to 120 kg), 2014, 2015 and 2019 (up to 130 kg each).

He began his international wrestling career with a start at the Junior European Championship (Cadets) 2007 in Warsaw in the weight class up to 100 kg body weight. He had to be content with a 16th place. In 2009 he won a bronze medal at the Junior European Championship (Juniors) in Tbilisi in the weight class up to 120 kg behind Riza Kayaalp , Turkey, and Dawid Oganesjan, Russia. He won the same medal at the 2010 Junior World Championships in Budapest in the weight class up to 120 kg.

In March 2013 Eduard Popp started for the first time in an international championship among seniors. In Tbilisi he defeated Balint Lam from Hungary in the weight class up to 120 kg, but lost in his next fight against Ljubomir Dimitrov from Bulgaria and came in 8th place. At the 2013 World Cup in Budapest, Eduard Popp defeated Vachagan Yeghiasarjan from Armenia and Levan Arabuli, Georgia. In his next fight he was defeated by former world champion Amir Aliakbari from Iran, who had just returned from a two-year doping ban . Then he also lost to Johan Eurén from Sweden, which he eliminated and finished in 7th place. During a follow-up check of the doping samples it was found that Amir Aliakbari had been doped again. The medal he won was revoked and he was banned for life. Admittedly, it didn't help Eduard Popp, because the world championship was long over.

In the following years Eduard Popp started regularly at world and European championships. He fought for many excellent placements, but has not yet won a medal. In 2014 he came in the world championship in Tashkent in the weight class up to 130 kg on an excellent 5th place, beaten only by Mijain Lopez Nunez from Cuba and Biljal Machow from Russia. Popp also took an excellent 5th place at the 2016 European Championships in Riga. Here he was defeated in the battle for one of the bronze medals against Ioseb Tschugoschwili from Belarus.

At the 2016 Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro, he defeated Nurmachan Tinalijew from Kazakhstan and Bashir Asgari Babajanzadeh from Iran, lost to Riza Kayaalp from Turkey and in the battle for a bronze medal against Sabah Shariati from Azerbaijan, whom he had recently won at the European Championships had defeated.

At the 2017 World Championships in Paris, he won over Naveen Naveen from India and Alin Alexuc-Ciurariu from Romania, before losing to Oscar Pino Hinds from Cuba and finishing in 9th place.

At the 2018 World Cup in Budapest, Eduard Popp won over the African champion Abdellatif Mohamed Ahmed Mohamed from Egypt and Balint Lam, but then lost to Adam Coon from the United States. In the consolation round he won against the Chinese Meng Lingzhe, but lost in the fight for one of the bronze medals against the South Korean Kim Min-seok just on points.

At the 2019 World Cup in Nur-Sultan (Kazakhstan) Eduard Popp was able to convince. He won there over Beka Kandelaki from Azerbaijan and Abdfellatif Mohamed Ahmed Mohamed, before he lost to Riza Kayaalp and in the battle for one of the bronze medals against Iakobi Kajaia from Georgia and again took 5th place. He qualified early for participation in the 2020 Olympic Games in Tokyo.

Eduard Popp has once again proven that he belongs to the world's heavyweight elite.
