Gerhard Weisenberger (born January 30, 1952 in Kleinostheim ) is a former German wrestler .
Career
Gerhard Berger manner began in 1963 at SC Siegfried Kleinostheim with the rings . He made very rapid progress under coach Klemens Schwab and was one of the best German youth wrestlers from 1967. In the youth sector he started in both styles (Greco-Roman and free style), as a senior only in free style. From 1967 to 1970 Gerhard Weisenberger was a total of six times German youth champion in both styles in the weight classes from 43 kg body weight (1967) to 60 kg body weight (1970). In 1971 he was also German junior champion in free style in featherweight before Alfons Keller from Hallbergmoos , after he had already become German vice junior champion in 1970 behind Emil Müller from Mainz in bantamweight.
In the senior class, Gerhard Weisenberger won his first German featherweight championship title in 1971 and his fourth lightweight in 1976. His international career began with a 5th place at the Junior World Championship (Juniors = up to the age of 18) in 1969 in Boulder / USA in free style in the class up to 60 kg body weight. He was also able to place well at the Junior World Championships in 1970 in Huskvarna as sixth and at the Junior European Championships in 1972 in Hvar as fifth.
Gerhard Weisenberger competed twice at the Olympic Games. In 1972 in Munich he started in featherweight and reached 8th place with two wins. In 1976 in Montreal he started in the lightweight, again achieved two victories, but ended up only in 12th place in the final accounts.
Gerhard Weisenberger has also competed at world and European championships several times. He achieved the greatest success of his career at the European Championships in 1975 in Ludwigshafen am Rhein . There he won the European Championship bronze medal with three victories .
Gerhard Weisenberger, who meanwhile competed for SV Einigkeit Aschaffenburg-Damm and also for KSV Witten , ended his international wrestling career after 1976. The employee at the Aschaffenburger Stadtwerke remained loyal to wrestling as a trainer to this day. For many years he trained the wrestling team of AC Bavaria Goldbach and won the German team championship several times with this club in the late 1980s and early 1990s. He has also been the Hessian national coach for many years. His son Peter Weisenberger is one of the best freestyle wrestlers in Germany and was also a German senior champion.
