Career

Karl-Heinz Stahr started out as a gymnast as a teenager , but soon switched to wrestling due to a lack of prospects in gymnastics . There he made rapid progress, was Spartakiadesieger (GDR youth champion) and then delegated to SG Dynamo Luckenwalde .

In the GDR championships in 1972, 1973 and 1975 Stahr won the runner-up in free style in featherweight. He never won a title.

At the international level, Stahr achieved some very good results in international tournaments and was sent to the 1973 World Championships in Tehran . There he surprised the wrestling world by winning the silver medal. He was defeated by the 1972 Olympic champion Zagalav Abdulbekow from the Soviet Union and Petre Coman from Romania , but celebrated a remarkable victory over Iwan Jankow from Bulgaria .

In the years that followed, he was only used once at an international championship, the 1974 World Cup in Istanbul . Stahr didn't get along as well here as in 1973 and finished 12th with a win.
