action
Sam Montgomery lives a fairytale life in the San Fernando Valley with her widowed father Hal. When he marries Fiona, she brings her two twin daughters Brianna and Gabriella into the new family.
In the Northridge earthquake in 1994 when Sam was eight years old, her father was killed and Sam was left alone with the two stepsisters and her stepmother Fiona, who inherits everything from her father.
Eight years later, stepmother Fiona redecorated Sam's father's diner in the style of the 1950s and forced Sam to work there, otherwise she would not get paid for her studies. Her only hope is her good friend Carter and her e-mail acquaintance "Nomad609", whom she met in a chat room at Princeton University , but has never met and does not know her real name.
Austin Ames, the quarterback of the football team and heartthrob, just do not know that behind his acquaintance "Princetongirl818" Sam. Sam also believes that schoolmate Austin, who seems arrogant at school, would never be interested in her. But Austin is also struggling with some problems. His father doesn’t like to see Princeton visit, instead he’s supposed to take over his father’s car wash business.
Austin wants to Sam on Halloween - Homecoming meet -Ball to finally see. But Fiona forbids her to attend the school ball and lets her work in the diner instead. With the help of Rhonda, a clerk in the diner, Sam manages to leave the workplace. Rhonda gives Sam her wedding dress for the ball and together they get her a mask. She meets Austin at the school ball and since he is disguised but not wearing a mask, she recognizes him immediately. However, she keeps her mask on the whole evening, Austin does not recognize it and she does not reveal her real name either. Shortly before her secret is about to be revealed, her preset alarm rings - it is 11:45 p.m. and Sam has to go back to the diner by midnight so that Fiona does not notice that she has disappeared. In the rush, she loses her cell phone on the steps and Austin takes it. Meanwhile, both were elected prince and princess of the ball.
A few days later, Sam's stepsisters find out she is writing to Austin Ames and devise a nasty plan: They pass the emails on to the cheerleader leader Shelby, whom Austin has only recently split from, and embarrass Sam with one Performance in which their mails are presented and Sam is exposed. Sam, who is a high school student, hopes to be accepted at Princeton every day. When this arrives, however, Fiona exchanges it for a cancellation.
One day, Sam has had enough of her stepfamily and moves in with Rhonda. After putting her stepmother and Austin in their place, she and Carter go to the last football game of the year. When all the attention to Austin gets too much for Sam, she wants to leave. Austin sees it from the field, walks up to her in the stands and kisses her in front of all the spectators. Last but not least, a will is found from Sam's father, stating that all of his former possessions - including the house and diner - will go to Sam. Fiona is arrested because she signed the will as a witness but claimed there was none.
Sam finally visits Princeton University with Austin, who has also been admitted, and starts a happy future with him while Fiona, Gabriella and Brianna have to work off their sentence in the diner.

- Frank Brenner said on schnitt.de: "Cinderella Story is certainly not an asset to film history, but it is definitely the better alternative compared to the current Hollywood products made for a predominantly male teen audience."
