Werner Hettich

Werner Hettich (born March 12, 1946 ) is a former German wrestler . He was Vice European Champion in 1969 in the Greco-Roman style featherweight.

Career

Hettich comes from Vörstetten in southern Baden . He began wrestling as a teenager at the local athletics club. During his entire career, he did not concentrate on one style, but worked in both styles, Greco-Roman and free style. In 1963 he was German youth champion in the Greco-Roman style in the class up to 57 kg body weight, which he followed in 1964 in the free style in the same weight class.

He was also successful in the next age group, the juniors, at the German championships. Although he took second place behind Eduard Schwaben from Aschaffenburg at the German junior championship in 1965 in the Greco-Roman style in bantamweight , he won the junior title in free style in featherweight a year later, in 1966.

In 1966, Hettich was also very successful with senior citizens. He became German featherweight masters both in the Greco-Roman style and in the free style. In the course of his further career, in which he moved to Bundesliga club AV Freiburg-St.Georgen in 1968, he won four other German championship titles, three in the Greco-Roman style and one in the free style.

Hettich's international wrestling career also began in 1966. That year, he finished 12th at the European Championships in Karlsruhe in free style. In the next few years he was at the start several times at world and European championships. He placed between places 5 (World Championship 1969, free style in Mar del Plata ) and 9 (European Championship 1968 in Greco-Roman style in Västerås ). The best result of his career he achieved at the European Championships in Modena in 1969 , where the strong wrestlers from the Eastern Bloc countries were missing because the Italian starter refused to fly the flag of the GDR . He used this opportunity in his favor and achieved an excellent 2nd place in Modena with five wins. Only in the final did he have to surrender to Metin Alakoc from Turkey .

At the 1972 European Championships in Katowice he was so badly injured after his first three fights that he had to give up the tournament and was unable to contest the subsequent qualifying tournaments for the Olympic Games.

After this disappointment, Werner Hettich ended his wrestling career.
