The Athletic Sports Association Mainz 1888 is a German wrestler club from the Rheinhessen Mainz .

ASV Mainz 1888 won the German team championship in 1973, 1977 and 2012 and won the cup in 1969.

history

The club was founded on May 6, 1888 in the restaurant "Brauhaus zum Gutenberg" under the name of Mainz Athletes Club. At around the same time, the two other heavy athletics clubs, the Mainz Athlete Club and the Mainz Kraftsportklub, were founded in Mainz. After the First World War , the three clubs merged to form the Mainz Athletics Sports Association in 1888.

As early as 1890 the club succeeded in bringing the Hessian championships in wrestling and weightlifting to the Frankfurter Hof (Mainz) .

The first small successes were already apparent in the 1960s, in 1973 and 1975 they were able to prevail at the German championships in team wrestling against Witten and Vfk Schifferstadt.

In 1979 ASV Mainz rose to the 2nd Bundesliga in 1888 after a disappointing season after the German Wrestling Association decided to downsize the 1st Bundesliga for the 1980 season from 10 to 8 clubs.

In 1980 the ASV became champions of the 2nd Bundesliga center. In the promotion battles in 1981, however, the team had to admit defeat the TuS Adelhoven. In the 1985/86 season they were again champions of the middle season and met in the promotion battle on ASV Heros Dortmund , against whom they failed after a draw and a defeat. A year later they won again the championship of the middle season and this time met the ASV Essen-West . The Mainz team won the battle with 23: 16.5 in front of 1400 spectators, less than in previous years, but still well filled. Almost 400 Mainzers traveled to the decisive fight for the rematch in Essen. The ASV Mainz lost 17:18 in 1888, but thanks to the good result in the battle, the Rheinhessen rose anyway.

In the 2nd Ringer Bundesliga West, the ASV won the championship in 2006/07 and prevailed in the relegation to the 1st Bundesliga against Eintracht Aachen-Walheim and RG Saarbrücken. The club has started in the 1st Bundesliga North since 2007. In 2012/13 the Mainz became German champions.
