Antonio Ferraro

Antonio Ferraro (* 1523 in Giuliana , † 1609 in Castelvetrano ) was an Italian painter, sculptor and plasterer of Mannerism in Sicily .

Life

He received his first training in the Gagini workshop . After Di Marzo he was also a student of the painter Orazio Alfani , who worked in Sicily between 1539 and 1544. In 1553 he worked with Giuseppe Spatafora on the marble holy water font in the Cathedral of Palermo .

From 1577 to 1580, on behalf of Principe Carlo d'Aragona e Tagliavia, his main work, the overall decoration of the choir chapel and crossing of San Domenico of Castelvetrano, was created . In addition to the 14 larger than life stucco figures, figures made of terracotta, numerous medallions and reliefs, he also proved himself to be a skilful fresco painter . In the right ceiling area of ​​San Domenico, his self-portrait with the inscription “Tanti operis huius caelator egregius Antonius Ferrarus ac Julianensi hic est” has been preserved. Around 1590 he stuccoed the Cappella della Madonna della Catena in the Chiesa Madre by Caltabellotta.

Antonio Ferraro is an important representative of Mannerist stucco art of the late 16th century, whose main master in the 17th century was Giacomo Serpotta .

Only a few works are known by his sons Tommaso Ferraro and Orazio Ferraro .
