Giuseppe Spatafora

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Giuseppe Spatafora (born before 1551, probably in Termini Imerese ; died in Palermo in 1572 ) was an Italian sculptor, plasterer and architect of the Senate in Palermo in the second half of the 16th century.

Life

Spatafora was a student of Antonello Gagini in Palermo and worked in the workshop of his sons Fazio and Vincenzo . From 1551 to 1554 he designed a model for the new building of the Chiesa di Santa Maria la Nova . From 1567 to 1568 he was involved in the redesign of the Cassaro (today Corso Vittorio Emanuele ), which was in connection with the urban renewal (Renovatio Urbis) ordered by Viceroy Carlo de Aragon . In 1564 Spataforo became the town's builder.

His best-known sculptural work is the holy water stoup in the cathedral of Palermo , created in collaboration with Antonio Ferraro in 1553 with the “Annunciation” and the reliefs “Moses knocks water out of the rock” and “Christ heals a paralyzed man”.

His son was the painter, sculptor and architect Antonio Spatafora . The painter Giuseppe d'Alvino , known as il Sozzo (around 1550 - April 11, 1611) is proven to be a pupil of Spatafora .
