Santa Maria La Nova (Palermo)

Santa Maria la Nova is a Renaissance style church in Palermo .

description

At today's Piazza San Giacomo La Marina, the church of Santa Maria was built together with a hospital in the 14th century and renovated between 1522 and 1531 as a three-aisled building in the Renaissance style and crowned with an octagonal dome by Giorgio Di Faccio. In 1585 the Deputazione per la redenzione dei cattivi was founded here , an institution for collecting ransom money for captured Christians by the Turks. The west facade is dominated by a three-arched loggia, which follows the model of the Palermi church of Santa Maria della Catena .

The interior is lavishly decorated with stucco by Procopio Serpotta . In the right aisle is the monumental tomb of the Giancardo family from the 18th century.
