Gaetano Mercurio
Gaetano Mercurio (around 1730 in Palermo ; † 1790 ibid) was an Italian painter of the late Baroque in Sicily .
Life
After an initial training with the Capuchin Father , writer and painter Fedele Tirrito , he went to Rome to the workshop of Sebastiano Conca . The first indication of his artistic activity came in 1778 when he delivered several panel paintings in Castelbuono , for example for the Chiesa Madre “Maria und Johannes Ev. appear to St. Eligius ” and other holy images. He also worked for the Chiesa SS. Crocefisso in Calatafimi , in Galati Mamertino , Chiaramonte Gulfi and for several churches in Palermo.
His sons Antonio (around 1750 to around 1800) and Gioacchino Mercurio (1758 to around 1808) worked in the father's workshop. The third son, Salvatore Mercurio , became consul of the silversmiths' guild.
Mercurio's most important student was Giuseppe Velasco .
