Ragalna is a city of Metropolitan city of Catania in the Region of Sicily in Italy with 4047 inhabitants (December 31, 2019).

Location and dates

Ragalna is located 30 km northwest of Catania on the southern slopes of Mount Etna . The inhabitants work mainly in agriculture and in summer in tourism.

The neighboring municipalities are Belpasso , Biancavilla , Paternò and Santa Maria di Licodia .

history

The origins of Ragalna go back to the time of the Arab rule in Sicily. The name comes from Arabic and means, for example, the village of Anna . The settlement developed as a row of houses. A center did not form until 1868, when the parish church was built. Ragalna has been an independent municipality since 1985. In summer the community grows strongly because it is used as a holiday resort.
