Bronte is a city in the metropolitan city of Catania in the region of Sicily in Italy with 18,702 inhabitants (as of December 31, 2019).
Location and dates
Bronte is located 54 km northwest of Catania on the western slope of Mount Etna . The inhabitants work mainly in agriculture ( pistachios ) and industry.
The neighboring municipalities are Adrano , Belpasso , Biancavilla , Castiglione di Sicilia , Centuripe ( EN ), Cesarò ( ME ), Longi ( ME ), Maletto , Maniace , Nicolosi , Randazzo , Sant'Alfio , Tortorici ( ME ), Troina ( EN ) and Zafferana Etnea .
history
In the Middle Ages there were 24 small towns here. These belonged to the monastery of Maniace. In 1520, Charles V formed the city of Bronte from all places. 1799 received Admiral Nelson from King Ferdinand III. the title Duke of Bronte (Duca di Bronte) and Bronte as a fief.
Bronte was destroyed in 1651, 1832 and 1843 when Mount Etna erupted.
Attractions
- Bronte Castle: The castle is about 13 km outside the city. The building dates from 1174. Margaret of Navarre founded the Abbey of Santa Maria di Maniace here. The Admiral Nelsons family lived here from 1799, and their descendants lived in the castle until 1981.
- Parish church from the 16th century
- Church dell'Annunziata, built in 1535
- Collegio Capizzi, built from 1774 to 1779, a palace with a rococo facade
- Every other year, at the end of September, the “Sagra del Pistacchio” festival is dedicated to the pistachio
